Tools, materials & suppliers

There are lots of options for leather tools, bag hardware and other materials. Below is a list of the ones that we like and tend to use the most. If you are just starting out in leather handbag making, then we suggest starting small and overtime investing in more tools and better quality ones. 

LEATHER TOOLS

Must have tools and material:

 

  • Scissors

  • Metal ruler

  • Stanley knife/box cutter

  • Self-healing cutting mat

  • 4mm pricking iron set (6, 4 and 2 teeth and 1 tooth) 

  • Nylon hammer or rubber mallet

  • Edge beveler

  • Edge burnisher

  • Sanding block or sandpaper (maybe a couple of different grit)

  • Gum Tragacanth and/or Tokonole 

  • Water-based glue, e.g. Renia Aquilim 315 & glue spatula

  • Stitching awl

  • Needles (e.g. John James - blunt end is best)

  • Waxed polyester thread (e.g. 0.55mm, 0.60mm)

  • Rotary punch

Tools that are useful but not a necessity when starting out:

  • Wing divider

  • Rivet setter (only required if you're using rivets)

  • Rubber cement, e.g. Renia Colle de Cologne or Barge

  • Leather wax/protector

  • Cork cutting board

Nice-to-have's - tools you can definitely work without but are pretty cool to own:

  • Stitching pony

  • Edge Kote (edge paint)

  • Oval hole puncher

  • Slot or straight punch 

  • Half round shaped punch

  • Scalpel / clicker knife

  • Beeswax

  • Plastic clips

  • Leather pliers

  • Bone folder

  • Cobblers anvil

  • Strap cutter

 BAG HARDWARE 

  • Swivel snap hooks

  • D-rings / O-rings

  • Buckles

  • Magnetic snaps

  • Snap button fasteners

  • Rivets or Chicago screws

  • Adjustable sliders

  • Sam Browne studs

  • Leather studs (e.g. pyramid studs) for decoration
